Spinal Cord Injuries

You Can Rely on Our Experienced Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers

Spinal cord injuries are much different than a "bad back." With a spinal cord injury, the victim suffers damage to the spinal cord that leads to a loss of function and/or mobility.

Referred to by the abbreviation SCI, they can be caused by both disease and direct trauma. Every year, more than 10,000 Americans suffer SCI. They are frequently the result of a roadway accident like a car accident, truck accident, or, often, a motorcycle accident. However, a vehicle is not always involved. Spinal cord injuries often result from violence-related accidents, accidents involving athletics or sports, as well as slip and fall accidents.

The impact of spinal cord injuries are often permanent, but may only be temporary. Symptoms include loss of movement (paralysis), of sensation, or loss of bladder/bowel control.

There are two types of spinal cord injury:

Complete spinal cord injury results in the victim losing sensation or voluntary motor movement below the level of the injury (one or both sides of the body). Injuries to the spinal cord in the neck often lead to paralysis of all limbs (quadriplegia); injuries lower on the spine cause paralysis to just the legs (paraplegia). Loss of movement can also result from a brain injury.

Incomplete spinal cord injury allows the victim some feeling or partial movement. For example, an incomplete cervical injury may leave the patient some use of their hands, while a complete injury in the same area can require use of a ventilator.
