In 2019, a computer hacker stole sensitive personal information from more than 100 million people from Capital One's computer system. Capital One's data was being stored on Amazon servers. The computer hacker previously worked as a software engineer for Amazon Web Services.
What information was stolen from Capital One
According to Capital One, the data breach occurred on March 22 and March 23, 2019. In July, Capital One outlined which data had been stolen by the computer hacker. This valuable data included:
- Social Security numbers
- Dates of birth
- Bank account information
- Phone numbers
Capital One released a statement saying it was "unlikely" that this data was used for criminal purposes. But if this data did find its way into the hands of criminals, they could use the information to create fraudulent credit card and bank accounts.
Who was affected by the Capital One data breach
People and businesses that had Capital One credit cards or had applied for a Capital One credit card or bank account between 2005 and 2019 were affected by this breach. It has been estimated that this includes more than 100 million people in the United States and six million people in Canada.
Initially, Capital One said in July 2019 that it was not contacting customers about the data breach. But after a backlash by customers and consumer advocates, Capital One announced that it would be notifying people who were affected by the data breach.
Even so, many people throughout the country are actively taking legal action against Capital One for failing to protect such important, sensitive personal data. That's because they understand the seriousness and severity of such a crime.
